Winter is officially over, but that does not mean the rain and snow has stopped. The rain has been nonstop lately, and it is causing some irritation for the spring sports teams at Placer High School.
Many teams at Placer are having their games and tournaments cancelled due to the wet weather. The teams getting the worst of the rain are the girls’ soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, and boys’ golf teams.
The girls’ soccer team is getting irritated with the rain because they all want to play soccer but they can’t play on the wet fields. Already five games have been cancelled, and it is affecting the team because they have to practice in the gym, where they can’t really practice soccer. Sophomore Cameron Rohde wants the rain to go away so she and her team can compete and play soccer.
“I want to just play soccer but we can’t because of all the rain,” stated Rohde.
Also getting hit hard with the rain is the baseball team. So far this season three games have been cancelled due to rain. The team has only played preseason games, and all five games cancelled have been league games. The team is finding it harder to practice in the gym and in the cage. Junior Brendan Fontes knows that the team will be affected later in the season when all the games are rescheduled.
“The rain makes scheduling hard because you never know if, when, or where practice is,” stated Fontes.
The softball team is also against the rain. The rain has cancelled 6 of their games already, and the team is finding it very irritating to not be able to play the games and practice. The team is practicing in the gym on rainy days, where they can’t bat because they are not allowed to have bats in the gym.
The boys’ golf team is being affected in a big way by all the rain. So far this season two games have been cancelled due to wet courses. The team has not been able to practice, so it is making it hard to improve. Freshman Cody Riecks is finding the rain to be very annoying.
“The rain is getting irritating because our games keep getting cancelled,” stated Riecks.
Placer’s track and field team is able to practice outside in the rain due to the all weather track, but some are finding it very difficult to do their events in the rain. Placer recently hosted the annual Lefebvre Relays, and it was a very wet day. At the event you mostly found teams huddled in blankets under an easy up. Although many teams left before the events end, only one event was cancelled, and the meet ended successfully.
“The rain is getting annoying, and I’m tired of running in it,” stated Freshman Zach Stelzer.
Another team not being affected much by the rain is the tennis team. The team has had two tournaments cancelled this season, but it is not affecting the team because they are still able to practice. The team is practicing in the weight room, and on the courts in the rain.
“I wish the rain would stop so we can get better practices and more games in,” stated junior Logan Thomsen.
