At the end of the school year students have the option of getting Placer’s yearbook but, what is the process of the yearbook being made?
As soon as the year begins students in the yearbook class are quick to start working to finish the book before the end of the year. The yearbook staff puts hard work into the many elements of creating the yearbook to be as interesting as possible.
Placer High School’s yearbook class is open to students of all grades. Due to the various grades and categories, the staff gets assigned pages to complete the work by the final deadline. Freshman Lucia Middleton helps design some of the pages. Middleton has contributed to numerous pages such as girls golf and the freshman pages. She is also responsible for attending events and taking photos.
“I enjoy yearbook because of the people in it and the special treatment for taking pictures,” explained Middleton.
During school events such as rallies or sports, yearbook students use their press passes to get on the sidelines and take pictures that Placer students see in the final copy. These up-close shots allow students to get sports action shots or candid photos of students adding depth to the yearbook. They make sure that readers really see an up-close view of what happens during Placer High events.
Francis Jones, a sophomore, has taken yearbook photos for almost all the girls volleyball games and many football games. Jones shared she always tries to get the best angles and really show the reactions, and emotions of what happened during the game.
The photos in Placer’s yearbook help bring the high school moments to life shining light on the reality of being a Hillmen.
Dan Wilson, Placer’s yearbook instructor for 19 years enjoys his role in the yearbook but it can be an extremely stressful job.
“Only yearbook staff members truly realize the hard work that goes into putting together a 240 page book,” said Wilson. “Most people think it is just taking photos and putting them on a page.”
“The yearbook staff always tries to make the best possible yearbook but it is a huge project that takes a lot of collaboration. The goal at the beginning of each year is to make a product the whole study body can be proud of.”
The highest role in the yearbook is the editor-in-chief. Rylee Yetka, a senior at Placer serves as the editor-in-chief for the 2024-25 yearbook staff. Her role amongst the staff is to look over everyone and see if their pages are completed by the deadline. When turned in, she edits the pages and works with the staff to complete the common goal of creating the book.
Yetka stated that her goal for this year is “To create a unique book unlike any that we’ve ever made before that really captures the whole year. ”
Being in this leadership role comes with many responsibilities. “It’s stressful but also fun, the most stressful part of it all is making the deadlines,” shared Yetka.
The yearbook is a very valuable book on campus and as the years go on it has more value to it. It shows memories from around campus and of sports that students can look back at in future moments. Many students purchase the yearbook to look back at what happened during the school year. These books help keep memories of the school year and even bond students and graduates over the time spent together at Placer.
